TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE RESUME #01

A resume is a document that you will need when applying for a job posting. This document helps the employer understand your experiences, education, and skill set before having to speak with you (your professional brand). It is an important document that will be viewed throughout your career by professionals looking to hire you, promote you, or share your information with someone interested in speaking with you about your unique skill set for a particular job.

Typically, resumes are written on one page in length if you are just starting out in your first job or have only a few years of early career experience. This is the format we will be using to create an exceptional resume for your job search and applications.

Note: As you progress in your career and increase the number of years of work experience, your resume may become two-pages long. If you see that other professionals have a longer resume, this would be the reason.

First, you must choose the roles you would like to apply to.

In order to effectively write your resume, you will need to know what roles you'd like to apply to. It is important to understand this as a first step because it helps you identify the core skills and strengths employers seek in candidates for a position. This is often found in the job description.

HOW TO WRITE SUMMARY SECTION

Your Summary or Profile Section is one of the first opportunities you have to speak directly to a recruiter or hiring manager on your resume. This is a great opportunity to be clear, concise, and specific about what skills you will be bringing to the job and the company you are applying to.

Summary sections are written in third person, like a professional bio. You will not use 'I' or 'me' to describe experiences.

LET'S DIVE IN

We will be writing your Summary or Profile section. You may have seen this written as an Objective in other resume templates, but we do not use that header title, as Objectives are no longer best practice in resume writing.

To start your summary section:

Step 1: Define who you are

Examples:

a. Finance Analyst and recent graduate

b. Legal Writer

Step 2: Describe what you do and its impact.

First you need to know the title of the roles you are applying to as this helps the hiring manager identify what type of professional you are. If you are applying for a legal assistant, you want to have legal assistant in your first sentence.

Step 3: How do you do this and for Whom

Think about if you worked directly with a client during your internship or if you are including other work experience in retail or hospitality. Did you work with customers or team members?

Examples:

a. Supporting teams with digital strategy and project execution

b. Working with html and python code to support client delivery teams

We want to know what your biggest impact is for the business. Are you helping support clients to overcome obstacles, are you supporting a team of lawyers to prepare for trial? This is the next sentence and often includes a few different areas of your experience and impact. "

Step 4: Explain what's unique and different about you to create a hook.

Examples:

a. Strong communicator, collaborating with other departments to develop cohesive strategies to enhance brand growth.

b. Analytical and creative problem solver, with strong ability to navigate complex projects and translate requirements for other team members.

This part of your summary is where you deliver impact and how you have done it. If you are an excellent writer or communicator, you will want to put that. Do you leverage software that makes your work more streamlined? Are you excellent at negotiating or adding value in meetings?

Think about the 'Bigger Picture' of what you have helped the team achieve, or a new initiative that you had a contribution to. It can be a tiny task that added to helping a supervisor do more, or the team to complete a project on a tight timeline.

Example Summary:

Strategy Consultant and Business Management Graduate with hands-on experience in legal and business consulting across healthcare and professional service lines, and technology sectors. Support senior leaders in building strategic, long-lasting client and industry relationships. Ability to create actionable suggestions through examination of legal, operations, sales, and marketing departments, and leveraging best practices across data and market-driven analytics. Strong team collaborator working with teams managing multi-billion and multi-million-dollar agreements and portfolios.
